Which web host should I use?

Web

This is one of the top 5 questions I get asked by clients who need a website and aren’t sure where to start. So, I decided to sit with that question and really think hard (and troubleshoot a lot) to give my clients the best answer I could come up with.

Drumroll please…...

For 90% of my clients, I think the answer is Squarespace.

I have worked with many web hosts and content management systems. I still actively maintain websites for clients on numerous platforms, and there are some circumstances where another host might make more sense. But the majority of my clients are looking for a few key characteristics that I think make Squarespace a great option.

  1. The user interface is intuitive. Most of my clients are more than willing to get a designer to help them set up their site. But they don’t want to have to wait on a web manager to change every little sentence that needs updating. One thing I love about Squarespace is that the user interface is intuitive and easy to use. Which means, we can all feel confident that when you go to update your newest blog post or hours of operation, it will feel effortless and look polished.

  2. Great responsiveness. Some CMSs and templates are better than others at responding to different screen sizes, browsers, and mobile devices. In my experience, Squarespace is among the best at ensuring that the site looks beautiful on all of your many devices.

  3. You can get up and running really quickly. Squarespace acts as a web host AND a content management system. What does that mean? It means that the days of buying the domain, and then finding a different web host, and then having to install or integrate an open-source CMS on top of it all just to get started are behind us (thank goodness). Squarespace gives you one place to log in, update, pay, and get paid.

Who are the other 10% of clients who may not be a great fit for Squarespace? Clients with a pre-paid hosting package with another vendor that they’re happy with. Clients who need an incredible amount of customization. And maybe a few other specific scenarios. And for those of you who may feel like this applies to you, I’d love to talk to you about how we can help you find the best solution for your specific needs.

But for the rest of us who have gotten this far and agree that Squarespace sounds like a good option for you, the next logical question is probably “why DPC?” Well, I’ve recently received the honor of becoming a Squarespace Circle Member. What does this mean? Basically, it means I’ve built a lot of Squarespace web sites and am now considered something of an super-user. But how does it help you? By building a website through a Squarespace Circle Member (like DPC), you can feel confident in my ability to provide the best web experience on this platform plus some special perks like special pricing on some packages as well as access to new features before they become available to everyone else. It’s a win-win.
