The small habits of web maintenance
Let me walk you through a not uncommon conversation with a potential web client.
Me: Tell me about your website.
Client: Honestly, I set it up some number of years ago. It doesn’t really reflect what I do and I know I need to level it up.
Me. That’s totally relatable. When was the last time you updated it?
Client: [insert grimance here]….the day I launched it.
If this is you, please put down the embarrassment card your holding and hear me when I say that this is a very common story. You know you need a website. You know you should keep it updated. You probably know that it isn’t even that hard to do. But in the midst of your crazy busy life and business obligations, you just haven’t been able to make the time. And, the longer you go without updating it, the bigger the task seems to become.
We get it. And this is a no judgement zone. But, as your trusted brand partner, we’re also here to give you the little nudge of inspiration we know you’re looking for to keep your website up to date and reflective of the hard work you put into your business.
Try these small habits first to turn your latent site into a beautiful, evolving reflection of your brand:
If you have a copyright statement in your footer, make sure the year is up to date. Nothing says “I don’t update my website” like a copyright statement from 2020. It’ll take a one minute update to one piece of text to fix this site-wide footer. If you do nothing else, do this one thing each January.
Update one service offering. A business that’s thriving is always evolving its offers and packages. Refresh or add one new service offering to your services page to show that evolution and to keep your offers fresh.
Make AI work for you. You don’t have to be an English major to have great copy on your site. Open up ChatGPT, tell it the message you’re trying to convey and ask it to write it for your web page. A task that used to take hours can now take minutes.
As we approach the new year, I challange each of you to take one step in the direction of improving your site. You might be surprised at how those little steps add up. And, of course, if you’re in need of a full website refresh or a specialist to do the updates for you, we have brand management packages for all budgets and needs.
